Specialty Crops Program Educator II - Jefferson City

Purpose:

The successful candidate will assist the Specialty Crops state Extension Specialist with research-based program implementation for small-scale, socially disadvantaged communities, farmers, and producers to help manage the Urban AgLearning Hub and serve as the acting Lincoln University Farmers Market Manager. This work will include planning and designing workshops, tours, field days, and other events.

Essential Job Functions:

  • Provide support to the State Extension Specialist (Supervisor).
  • Coordinate the efforts of Specialty Crops Program with a variety of outreach and education activities.
  • Overseeing all aspects of running and managing the Farmers Market year-round.
  • Develop a plan of work and activity plan for the Farmers Market.
  • Assisting with program implementation, including teaching, planning, designing, and evaluating the Urban AgLearning Hub.
  • Developing and compiling reports as assigned by supervisor and maintaining and submitting assigned reports on teaching activities.
  • Assisting the supervisor to monitor budgets.
  • Assisting in the development of teaching materials, including guide sheets and fact sheets, written at or below an eighth -grade reading level on subjects related to areas of Cooperative Extension, Agriculture, and Small farms.
  • This position requires working on weekends and evenings.
  • Helping to identify, solicit, and secure extramural funding through grants, private and public donations.

Knowledge, Skills, Abilities, and Personal Characteristics:

  • Outgoing and personable. Enjoys working with large groups of people.
  • Highly self-motivated.
  • Experience creating a variety of value-added products including canned, dehydrated, and baked goods.
  • Develop teaching demonstrations and classes.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Strong time-management, multi-tasking, attention to details and organizational skills.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and ability to communicate effectively.
  • Excellent Microsoft Excel skills, proficient in other Office applications and the ability to become proficient in any systems used by Lincoln University.
  • Valid driver's license and access to a motor vehicle in working condition.
  • Ability to work independently.
  • Ability to work as part of a larger team.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree
  • Experience managing farmers markets for two years or longer preferred.
  • Experience working with the public for one year or longer preferred.
  • Experience participating as a vendor at a farmers' market desired.

Certifications, Licenses, Registrations:

  • Must have a valid driver's license.
  • Produce Safety Grower Training

Physical Demands:

  • Must be comfortable working outdoors and in all weather conditions and temperatures.
  • The applicant should express if special accommodations are needed.
  • Must be comfortable with heavy lifting (at least 50 lbs.)
