Soil Tech I

Purpose:

The Soil Tech I position is a full-time position renewed annually based on job performance and funding availability. The main purpose of this position is to help implement climate-smart projects coordinated by the Soil Health and Sustainable Soil Management program.

Essential Job Functions:

  • Fieldwork (50%). Maintenance of experimental plots at Alan T. Busby Farm (irrigation, weeding, data collection, etc.)
  • Lab work (40%). Process and analyze large volume of samples (plants, soil, air/gas, etc.)
  • Other tasks (10%). As assigned by the supervisor. For example, assisting graduate students' work.

Additional Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Active participation in the delivery of technology transfer efforts such as oral/poster presentation at field days and/or conferences.
  • Other duties/responsibilities as assigned by the supervisor.

Qualifications:

Knowledge, Skills, Abilities, and Personal Characteristics:

  • Baccalaureate-degree (BSc) or above in Agriculture and Food Sciences or closely related fields.
  • Good communication skills.
  • Good computer skills, including strong competency with excel spreadsheet, PowerPoint presentation, word processing, etc.
  • Ability and desire to conduct greenhouse and fieldwork in all weather conditions.
  • Experience in laboratory analysis of samples (soil, plant, water, and/or air samples) and experience working with greenhouse and field experiments is highly desired.
  • Knowledge and ability to operate farm machinery (tractors, flail mowers, etc.)
  • Must have a valid driver's license or the ability to obtain a driver.

Physical Demands:

  • Ability to lift up to 50 lbs.
  • Prolonged periods of working outside in all weather conditions.

This is a 12-month fixed term position, effective from the date of employment. Renewal on an annual basis is contingent upon job performance and funding availability.
