Position Summary

The Residential Director is a staff member living in an university owned property assisting in the development of students in the community and managing the safety and security of the residents.

The Residential Director should have a passion for working with a diverse student population, is committed to student learning and development, and has strong critical thinking and problem-solving skills.

Essential Functions, Duties, and Responsibilities

  • Responsible for the development and management of an educational environment within the residential community that supports academic achievement and community development.
  • Responsible for the management of the residence life program, including daily operation of all university housing facilities, crisis management, and crisis response.
  • Responsible for hiring, training, appraising, and supervising a team of Residential Assistants in all residential communities.
  • Manages routine, critical, daily, and seasonal administrative tasks.
  • Facilitate positive interpersonal relationships within the residential community.
  • Schedules and follows-up with on-going maintenance, repairs, or renovations to community spaces and general building condition.
  • Serves as a conduct hearing officer, including developmental conversations, administering sanctions, and follow-up as needed.
  • Manages a yearly budget to support programming.
  • Maintain security, health, fire, and safety standards.
  • Provide adequate coverage by participating in an on-call duty program.

  • Ability to maintain person equilibrium in the face of many different pressures.
  • Understanding of and skill in working with the group process.
  • Demonstrated ability to address inappropriate student behavior using student development and conflict resolution strategies.
  • Ability to work independently.
  • Demonstrated skill in multi-tasking, organization, planning, creativity, and innovation.
  • Demonstrated ability in fiscal management.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Demonstrated successful record of working with a diverse student, faculty, and staff community.
  • Commitment to the wellness model of health.
  • Knowledge and experience in Microsoft Office programs.

Education and Experiences

  • Bachelor's degree is required, Master's degree in Student Personnel or related field is preferred.
  • 1-2 years prior residence life, student affairs, or related experience.
  • Previous experience in the areas of programming planning and implementation, supervision, and crisis management is preferred.

Physical Requirements

  • Light sedentary office work.
  • Prolonged periods of sitting at a desk and working on a computer.
  • Ability to lift up to 25 lbs.
