Research Assistant

PURPOSE:

This position would help the principal investigator (PI) achieve the objectives of research projects in water quality,
food safety, and plant health. The incumbent is expected to assist with fieldwork, maintain daily laboratory operations,
supervise graduate students and contribute to data analysis and scientific publications.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:

• Laboratory daily operation and management
• Training of undergraduate workers
• Data analysis

ADDITIONAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

• Help the principal investigator (PI) in the daily operation and effort, in seeking funding support from both internal and extramural sources, and in achieving the research objectives of multiple research projects in food safety, water quality, and plant health.

QUALIFICATIONS:

• A bachelor's degree in microbiology or related areas is required.
• Experience in food/water microbiology is required.
• Experience in molecular biology is preferred.

Knowledge, Skills, Abilities and Personal Characteristics:

• Knowledge and skills of microbial source tracking.
• Knowledge and skills of molecular biology.
• Ability to handle multiple tasks simultaneously, with little supervision.

Certifications, Licenses, Registrations

• Missouri state driver's license

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

• Ability to sit at a workstation for extended periods.
• Occasional ability to lift, carry, and put away parcels weighing up to 25 pounds.
• Normal physical mobility, which includes movement from place to place on the job taking distance and speed
  into account.
• Normal physical agility, which includes the ability to maneuver the body while in place.
• Normal physical strength to handle routine office materials and tools.
• Normal dexterity of hands and fingers.
• Normal coordination, including eye-hand, hand-foot.
• Normal endurance

under that grant, whichever occurs first.
This is a 12-month fixed term position, effective from the date of employment. Renewal on an annual basis is
contingent upon job performance and funding availability.
