Position Summary
The Lincoln University of Missouri Writing Center supports students in developing their skills as writers, researchers, and critical thinkers. The Writing Center provides a welcoming and inclusive space where writers are empowered to make thoughtful choices in their compositions and to develop their writing style and voice.
The Writing Center's Project Specialist acts as a key representative of the Writing Center by greeting all visitors and assisting students in scheduling appointments and tutor assignment. The Project Specialist is responsible for the day-to-day management of the Writing Centers' schedules. The Project Specialist must be able to multitask while maintaining a warm, welcoming demeanor to serve students effectively. The candidate will work closely with the Director of the Writing Center, contributing positively to the day-to-day operations and develop long-term plans for growth of its overall learning environment.
Essential Functions, Duties, and Responsibilities
- Manage on-campus, online, and email writing services by hiring and training student writing coaches.
- Manage administration of records and Writing Center services, including digital logs, waitlists, and referrals.
- Mentor and manage student workers, including performance, scheduling, and pay.
- Scheduling Writing Center appointments for students over the phone and in person; assisting students experiencing technical difficulties during virtual appointments.
- Identifying student needs and assisting in tutor assignment.
- Produce writing resources, workshops, and content
- Generate reports such as utilization and satisfaction for all services and programs.
- Representing the Writing Center during library tours and in-class visits.
- Collaborating with the Writing Center Director on assorted projects, including scheduling, marketing, and other duties as assigned.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
- Ability to multitask, troubleshoot technical problems, and maintain organization across disparate systems.
- Comfortable conducting presentations and public speaking engagements.
- Experience utilizing technology to conduct work remotely.
- Strong interpersonal and communication skills and the ability to work effectively with a diverse faculty, staff, and student body.
- Ability to make administrative and procedural decisions and judgments on sensitive, confidential issues.
- Thorough knowledge of Business English and arithmetic; general office methods, procedures, and practices.
- Ability to plan, develop, and coordinate multiple projects.
- Ability to gather data, compile information, and prepare reports.
- Ability to supervise and train staff, including organizing, prioritizing, and scheduling work assignments.
- Strong organizational skills and detail orientation.
- Excellent telephone courtesy knowledge and experience.
- Ability to interpret, adapt, and apply guidelines and procedures.
- Skill in examining and re-engineering operations and procedures, formulating policy, and developing and implementing new strategies and procedures
- Ability to develop and maintain recordkeeping systems and procedures.
- Ability to resolve customer complaints and concerns.
Education and Experience
- An M.A. in English and/or Rhetoric and Composition or related degree (preferred); minimum Bachelor's degree in English, Writing, Rhetoric and Composition, or similar.
- Two years of experience in customer service, tutoring, and/or higher education, including student services or a writing or learning center.
- Skilled interpersonal communicator, especially active listening.
- Skilled in the use of personal computers and related software applications.
Physical Requirements

- Prolonged periods of sitting at a desk and working on a computer.
- Ability to lift up to 25 lbs.
