Grant Writer

PURPOSE


Reporting to and directed by the Office of Sponsored Programs and Title III, the Grant Writer will be
responsible for securing the financial resources necessary to support academic and learning services
functions of Lincoln University, Missouri. The Grant Writer prepares federal public/private foundations
and state grant proposals and ensures compliance for such; researches and identifies private and
corporate foundation opportunities and evaluates appropriateness for college; responsible for
developing grant proposals and manages the grant development process to develop funds that will
sustain and expand the program and administrative needs; assembles all pertinent grant material
packages for final submission; ensures overall accuracy and quality of all grant contract documents
leaving the organization; develops and maintains thorough knowledge of Lincoln University's
contracts with donors; works with the Director of Sponsored Programs and Title III and others to
coordinate the completion and submission of required follow-up reports, and updates and maintains
the grants.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS.


  • Designs and maintains an intake process for enacting a project priority list as well as tracking
    progress of grant application.
  • Provides full lifecycle editing and writing support for grant submissions, including creating
    proposal work plans, managing timelines and proposal milestones, and coordinating meetings
    and documents within sponsored program-seeking teams.
  • Edits proposals for persuasive language, clarity, and length; applies knowledge of proposal
    writing best practices (e.g., win themes, logic models) to improve narrative flow. Integrates
    content from multiple authors and ensures unified voice and appearance across all narrative
    documents.
  • Identifies funding opportunities suitable for Lincoln University's needs and priorities.
  • Reviews draft proposals to ensure alignment with the solicitation and funder's research
    priorities.
  • Reviews proposal feedback for potential resubmission opportunities and/or submission to other
    grant agencies.
  • Collaborates with appropriate units across campus (e.g., Department chairs, Dean offices,
    Institutional Research) to help sponsored program seekers
    prepare compliant and responsive proposals.
  • Evaluates complex funding solicitations and past awards to advise the Director of Sponsored
    Programs and Title III on sponsor expectations and help guide responsive concept
    development for new proposals or renewals. Interprets sponsor guidelines and seeks
    clarification from sponsor when needed.
  • Adhering to School and university and state and federal policies and procedures as well as
    professional ethical standards in their carrying out of these activities.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Bachelor's degree; three or more years of experience in developing or writing proposals to
    federal, state, or private funding agencies.


Preferred

  • Master's degree demonstrating general knowledge of various technical fields with 5 years of
    experience in sponsored program proposal writing experience resulting in grant funding.
    Professional experience in a research environment, such as a university, non-profit, or national
    laboratory. Experience successfully writing and coordinating the development of multidisciplinary, multi-year proposals. In-depth understanding of proposal preparation and
    submission processes.

Knowledge, Skills, Abilities and Personal Characteristics

  • At least 3-5 years of full-spectrum resource development, fundraising, and grant writing
    experience.
  • Potential to work effectively with the culture and values of Lincoln University and able to
    work comfortably within a diverse and shared services organizational model.
  • Extensive broad-based knowledge of the principles, practices, and techniques of oral and
    written communications and interpersonal skills to determine the most effective method to
    present persuasive proposals to potential funding sources.
  • Knowledge of federal research funding agencies and their associated guidelines.
  • Strong writing, planning, organizational, and management skills.
  • Strong communication skills including the ability to write and speak persuasively about the
    institution.
  • Strong ability to prioritize multiple projects, meeting strict deadlines, while maintaining
    strong attention to detail.
  • Excellent knowledge and experience of computer applications such as word processing,
    Excel, electronic data tracking, internet, websites, Facebook, etc.
  • Flexibility and initiative, with the ability to work independently as well as in a team
    environment.
  • Ability to understand a variety of research disciplines, gained through experience and/or
    training or an openness to learning new disciplines to best assist faculty and staff.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS
1. Nature of work requires an ability to operate standard business office equipment.
2. Light sedentary office work
3. Prolonged periods of sitting at a desk and working on a computer
4. Must be able to lift up to 25 lbs.


WORKING CONDITIONS
1. Work performed in a general office environment.
2. May require availability for overtime hours during peak periods.
