Fleet Mechanic

PURPOSE:

The University fleet mechanic is responsible for the maintenance, repair, and servicing of the university's fleet of vehicles, including buses, trucks, vans, and other motorized equipment. This role ensures that all vehicles are in safe, operational condition, performs diagnostics, and conducts routine preventative maintenance to minimize downtime. The University fleet mechanic will also troubleshoot and repair vehicle issues, maintain service records, and ensure compliance with safety and environmental regulations.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:

  • Perform routine inspections, maintenance, and repairs on university-owned fleet vehicles, including buses, vans, trucks, and other campus transportation equipment.
  • Diagnosing and troubleshooting mechanical, electrical, and system issues in vehicles, providing timely repairs to minimize downtime.
  • Manage tire replacement, brake checks, engine diagnostics, fluid checks, and other preventive maintenance tasks.
  • Keep detailed records of all repairs, services, and inspections for vehicles in the fleet.
  • Ensure all fleet vehicles meet safety standards, emissions regulations, and university policies.
  • Assist in the preparation of vehicles for seasonal needs (e.g., winterizing or preparing for high-traffic periods).
  • Coordinate with the transportation or facilities team to schedule vehicle repairs and services.
  • Manage and track vehicle inventory, including parts and supplies, and recommend the purchase of necessary tools or equipment.
  • Respond to emergency breakdowns and ensure quick resolution or alternative transportation solutions.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  1. High school diploma or equivalent.
  2. Proven experience as an automotive or fleet mechanic, with a focus on maintenance and repair of a variety of vehicles (cars, trucks, buses, etc.).
  3. Strong knowledge of vehicle systems (engines, brakes, electrical systems, etc.) and diagnostic tools.
  4. Ability to work independently and manage multiple tasks efficiently.
  5. Valid driver's license, with a clean driving record.

Certifications, Licenses, Registrations:

  • ASE certification or equivalent automotive mechanic certifications preferred.

Knowledge, Skills, Abilities and Personal Characteristics:

  • Strong troubleshooting and problem-solving skills.
  • Familiarity with safety regulations (OSHA), environmental standards, and university fleet policies.
  • Ability to work independently and manage multiple repair tasks efficiently.
  • Extensive knowledge of vehicle systems (engines, brakes, electrical systems, etc.) and proficiency with automotive diagnostic tools.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

  • Lifting and carrying objects of varying weights, standing for extended periods, walking frequently, climbing ladders, bending and stooping, reaching overhead, pushing or pulling heavy items, kneeling, crouching, manual dexterity for handling small objects, and good vision and hearing.
  • Ability to work in various weather conditions.
