First and Second Year Experience Coordinator
Position Summary:
The Freshman & Sophomore Experience Coordinator develops and executes activities designed to meet the educational, emotional, and social development needs of freshman cohorts and rising sophomores. This position is responsible for the successful retention of each freshman class, as well as the persistence and advancement of university freshmen to sophomore status and beyond. Responsibilities include the development and execution of program goals and initiatives designed to facilitate the acclamation of first and second-year success at the University.
Essential Functions, Duties, and Responsibilities:
- Serves as freshman and sophomore class advisor.
- Leads New Student Orientation in collaboration with the Office of Recruitment and Admissions.
- Researches and implements best practices for experiential learning, supplemental instruction, and student success.
- Utilizes appropriate data to implement procedures, practices, and policies regarding development of student success programs and/or ways to improve and enhance retention and persistence.
- Develops and implements frameworks for familiarizing students with college support services and academic engagement opportunities.
- Works with appropriate stakeholders to create, implement, and present workshops and seminars to freshman and sophomores, introducing student success initiatives and other support services.
- Maintains effective and efficient advising models incorporating monitoring of early intervention alerts.
- Works to coordinate and facilitate the early-alert process among freshman and sophomore students, but also provides this same support for the overall undergraduate student body, understanding the necessity and focus for providing timely response to faculty concerns relative to student performance in the classroom.
- Serves as the connector of resources for students identified through the early-alert process and tracks the engagement of students with those resources.
- Create and implement appropriate frameworks for intervention for supporting students on academic probation.
- Collaborates with University stakeholders in the creation, maintenance, and assessment of data used to support student success activities and is readily available to successful articulate that data to the necessary internal and external audiences as required.
- Participate in the preparation of reports, meetings, and other activities which contribute to supporting student success, retention, and persistence.
- Other duties as assigned.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
- Familiarity with institutional systems including Colleague, Canvas, CRM Advise and/or EAB Navigate.
- Demonstration of interpersonal and customer service skills.
- Ability to serve as a liaison between students, faculty, administration, staff, and external partners.
- Must be highly organized with well-developed time management skills.
- Possess knowledge of essential areas of higher education including recruitment, assessment, and retention.
- Familiarity with mentoring, tutoring, and supplemental instruction programming.
Education and Experience:
The minimum education requirement is a master's degree in higher education, education, student affairs, social work, psychology or related area. The minimum experience requirement is 3-5 years of experience in higher education administration with an emphasis on student success, retention, persistence or student development.
Physical Requirements:
- Light sedentary office work
- Prolonged periods of sitting at a desk and working on a computer
- Ability to lift up to 25 lbs.
- Ability to participate in university events and projects outside of standard hours of operation.
