Detective Corporal

Position Summary

The Detective Corporal supervises the law enforcement and security activities of Lincoln University Police Department. The Detective Corporal is responsible to investigate assigned criminal cases to determine the nature of criminal activity, to prevent and solve crimes, and identify and apprehend offenders.

Essential Functions, Duties, and Responsibilities

  • Protect all assets and people within the University community via comprehensive crime prevention, fire safety, and hazardous material control.
  • Supervise all personnel within the Police Department's Patrol Division and Campus Security Officers as directed by the Patrol Sergeant.
  • Ensure the safety and security of all buildings and facilities through the use of patrolling and camera systems.
  • Maintain an accurate system of record and report retention submitted to the Cole County Prosecutor's Office. Act as a proactive liaison with local and state law enforcement agencies in criminal investigations.
  • Create, prepare, and maintain crime statistics and Clery Act compliance as directed.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Working knowledge of departmental police policies, procedures, rules, and regulations.
  • Ability to effectively guide, counsel, and manage subordinates on issues related to effective job performance.
  • Foster positive working relationships with superiors, peers, and subordinates.
  • Ability to work with highly sensitive information in a confidential and professional manner.
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced environment with an emphasis on meeting or exceeding departmental standards, goals, and objectives.
  • Implementing proactive crime prevention and community relations programs.

Education and Experience

  • 1 year experience in security, law enforcement, or other related fields in a supervisory capacity required.
  • 1 year experience in criminal investigations preferred.
  • Must be P.O.S.T. certified at the time of appointment.
  • Completion of First-Line Supervisor or Field Training Officer course preferred.

Physical Requirements

  • Ability to conduct foot patrols on uneven surfaces, slick or wet surfaces, stairs, rough terrain, and in all weather conditions.
  • Ability to work outside normal business hours, day and evenings. Ability to work weekends or holidays.
