Position Summary

The Chief of Staff serves as a confidential advisor and strategic partner to the President, ensuring the achievement of the University's vision, mission, and goals in collaboration with senior university leadership and external stakeholders. The Chief of Staff organizes and prioritizes critical issues and information for the President to facilitate efficient decision-making. The Chief of Staff supports and sustains a culture of service, professionalism, and continuous improvement in all organizational departments.

Essential Functions, Duties, and Responsibilities

  • Participates with the President and the senior leadership team in strategic planning and problem resolution affecting major segments of the University ensuring matters requiring the attention of executive leaders are thoroughly developed, researched, and evaluated.

  • Serves as a chief advisor to the President and acts as the liaison for the President and the University with various internal and external constituents by providing prompt and effective cascading executive communication.
  • Develops major goals to support broad based functional objectives and provides high level oversight, management, and guidance for critical top-priority projects.
  • Manages the daily operations of the University including all administrative, financial, and operational activities in collaboration with the President.
  • Conducts research and completes the appropriate analysis to effectively prepare the President to respond to internal and external matters of strategic importance.
  • Effectively manages inquiries, concerns, and other issues requiring Presidential input by addressing, coordinating and/or delegating the matter to the appropriate department for resolution.
  • Proposes and supports the utilization of data, metrics, and benchmarks across the University to strategize, inform, create, and evaluate expansion initiatives.
  • Assists with the development, interpretation, and implementation of relevant policies and procedures while serving on planning and policy-making committees as needed.
  • Anticipates, identifies, and troubleshoots issues of concern or significance and exercises discretion to provide timely information and updates to multiple stakeholders.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to effectively work with a wide range of constituencies in a diverse community.
  • Highly skilled in examining and re-engineering operations and procedures, applicable legislation and standards, and the regulatory environment of higher education.
  • Ability to develop comprehensive business plans for new or on-going projects and programs while collaborating with all key internal and external key stakeholders.
  • Extensive knowledge of alternative fundraising programs, methods, and techniques and the ability to implement a successful fundraising campaign.
  • Ability to compile, investigate, analyze, and draw executive conclusions from relevant data to effectively resolve problems or issues.
  • Ability to communicate effectively and diplomatically, orally and in writing as a primary representative of the University to diverse internal and external audiences.

Education and Experience

  • Mater's degree required from an accredited college or university. Doctorate preferred.
  • Minimum of 5 years of related experience in a higher education setting, including experience with strategic planning, budget, and accreditation processes and operationalizing to use data to make executive decisions.

Physical Requirements

  • Light sedentary office work.
  • Prolonged periods of sitting at a desk and working on a computer.
  • Ability to travel throughout the U.S.
