Biology Instructor

Purpose:

Biology Instructor for introductory biology courses for both majors and non-majors.

Essential Job Functions:

  • Design and deliver lectures, labs, and other course content related to introductory biology.
  • Prepare course materials, such as syllabi, homework assignments, and handouts.
  • Assess and grade student's coursework, such as exams, laboratory assignments, and participation.
  • Develop and implement new teaching methods to enhance student learning, including using high-impact teaching practices.
  • Maintain records of student attendance, grades, and other relevant metrics per University and Department policy.
  • Provide academic support and guidance to students who are struggling with the course material.
  • Advise students for university registration within the major.
  • Stay up to date with the latest developments in the biology field and incorporate these into course materials, where appropriate.

Additional Duties and Responsibilities:

An additional responsibility of this position is to act as the Introductory Biology Lab Coordinator. The Introductory Lab Coordinator portion of the position will be a .25-time Instructional release. The Introductory Biology Lab Coordinator will be required to obtain, maintain, and dispense instructional materials and equipment for the Biology Department introductory teaching labs, to uphold a safe lab environment, and to assist the lab instructors teaching these labs with the use and understanding of the materials and equipment. Specific duties will include:

  • Lead discussion on choices for laboratory instructional materials (decided by the biology faculty as a group).
  • Order and purchase laboratory materials.
  • Assemble and care for materials for use in classroom laboratories.
  • Issue, dispense, and maintain equipment used in the classroom laboratories.
  • Facilitate equipment calibrations and coordinate repairs with service technicians.
  • Advise and assist lab instructors in the use of laboratory equipment and with technical problems.
  • Manage laboratory hazardous waste/unwanted materials disposal.

Qualifications:

Applicants should possess a master's degree or PhD. in a related field. Applicants must have demonstrated experience teaching Biology courses at the high school or collegiate level, especially with reference to introductory biology for non-majors, and introductory laboratory classes. Applicants must display excellent communication and interpersonal skills and strong organizational and time management skills.

Physical Demands:

Work is performed in classroom and laboratory settings with minimal exposure to health or safety hazards. Substantial time is spent working on a computer. This is primarily sedentary work which requires the following physical activities, sitting, walking, bending, stooping, finger dexterity, repetitive motions, talking, hearing, and visual acuity. Applicants should be able to lift 20 lbs. regularly.
