Position Summary:

The Department Head will report directly to the Dean and provide the overall leadership, coordination and evaluation of the School of Business, in accordance with the Higher Learning Commission (HLC), university policies, strategic plan, rules and regulations as well as standards and criteria set forth by the Accreditation Council for Business Schools and Programs (ACBSP). The Department Head will manage academics in the department including curriculum, course offerings, advising, and classroom infrastructure and guide programmatic change. The workload of the department head during the academic year (August-May) shall be six contact hours of teaching, research, or extension per semester (.50 F.T.E.) and administrative tasks equivalent to .50 F.T.E., combined to comprise to compare a 1.00 F.T.E. assignment. The workload of department heads during the summer session shall be .33 F.T.E., with the option that they are eligible to teach courses, receive funding from grants or participate in cooperative research or cooperative extension up to 1.00 F.T.E. The department is ineligible to engage in overload in teaching assignments.

Essential Functions, Duties, and Responsibilities

  • Manage the department budget and work to expand the budget to assist in departmental growth, programmatic re-design, etc.
  • Establish and maintain a balance between the service provided to students, colleagues, and the individual rights of department faculty and staff.
  • Evaluates the job performance of faculty and staff within the unit.
  • Manage faculty and staff in the School of Business. Works with the small business development staff and leadership. Work to better the departmental working environment, expand resources for personal development and manage conflicts. Provide feedback through evaluations.
  • Assume other responsibilities as assigned by the dean, the VPAA, or the president.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Knowledge on ACBSP standard and criteria required for progress reports and accreditation reaffirmation.
  • Process the knowledge, skills and abilities to lead the facility and staff in the daily activities of the School of Business.
  • Be a good communicator who understands department faculty, staff and students, and understand that all involved have different issues and we handle them differently.
  • Be able to envision growth and understand investment, both in the people managed, as well as the department and university as a whole.

Education and Experience

The minimum qualifications include an earned doctorate or its equivalent in training, ability, and or experience; a record of leadership experience within the profession or the university, evidence of successful teaching in higher education; and excellent communication and human relation skills. Experience in administration of programs in higher education to include strategic planning, budgeting, operations, and collaboration with colleagues.

Required - Ph.D.

Preferred - Ph.D. equivalent

Physical Requirements

  • Light sedentary office work.
  • Prolonged periods of sitting at a desk and working on a computer.
  • Ability to lift up to 25 lbs.
  • Extended hours may be required on occasion dependent on the work objectives and projects per the university.
