Assistant Professor of Forage Science

Purpose:

The Assistant Professor of Forage Science is expected to develop a high-impact, nationally recognized integrated forage management (IFM) research and extension program to improve our understanding of the conditions and processes required for successful establishment, management, and utilization of perennial pastures and annual forage crops with the ultimate goal to ensure sustainable and environmentally sound forage production systems in Missouri. The ideal candidate will be able to contribute positively to the academic success of the Department of Agriculture and Environmental Sciences by teaching courses including, but not limited to, Pastures and Forages (AGR 313) and Animal Feeds and Nutrition (AGR 331). The finalist is also expected to work closely with Lincoln University research farms, Missouri farmers/ranchers, extension educators, and agencies. This is a 12-month, non-tenure track, and full benefit eligible faculty position with 75:25 split appointment between research and extension responsibilities.

Essential Job Functions:

  • Develop innovative IFM research and outreach program, primarily focused on formulating model forage systems for various Missouri environments and categories of livestock including small ruminants.
  • Write grant proposals to secure extramural funding to support IFM research/extension program.
  • Publish research findings in peer-reviewed journals.
  • Recruit graduate students and supervise their thesis research.
  • Teach courses relevant to the selected candidate's expertise [including Pastures and Forage (AGR 313) and Animal Feeds and Nutrition (AGR 331)].
  • Provide service at departmental, college and university levels, including committee services.

Additional Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Any other duties as assigned by the faculty member's department head and dean.

Qualifications:

  • Ph.D. degree from an accredited institution in Forage Science, Rangeland Ecology, Agronomy, or a closely related field is required.
  • Strong record of publication in peer-reviewed scientific journals and traditional Extension outlets is preferred.
  • Candidates with post-doctoral experience will be preferred.

Knowledge, Skills, Abilities, and Personal Characteristics:

  • Demonstrated written and verbal communication skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively with diverse faculty and student population.
  • Ability to attract extramural grant funding is preferred.
  • Experience teaching/mentoring at the college/university level is desirable.
  • Complementary modeling or other quantitative techniques (e.g., data synthesis and assimilation, remote sensing) are also welcomed.

Certifications, Licenses, Registrations

Physical Demands:

  • Must be able to lift up to 50 lbs.
  • Must be able to work in cold and hot environmental conditions.
