Assistant Director - Campus Wellness and Recreation

Purpose:

The Assistant Director of Campus Wellness and Recreation is responsible for assisting the Director of Campus Wellness and Recreation with the overall administration, leadership, and management of all university wellness and recreation initiatives. The Assistant Director plays a vital role assisting with the execution of recreation programs and services that support and foster a strong and active culture of wellness at Lincoln University. The Assistant Director of Campus Wellness and Recreation is under the supervision of the Director of Campus Wellness and Recreation.

Essential Job Functions:

60% Wellness and Recreation Programming/Scheduling/Management:

  • Responsible for all Lincoln University campus recreational programming which includes, but is not limited to fitness, intramurals, club sports, informal recreation, and special events.
  • Responsible for organization and design of fitness and recreation, set-up needs, supervision of special events, and other planned activities.
  • Ensures the safety of all programs.
  • Hires, trains, and supervises Lincoln University Campus Recreation and fitness staff.
  • Write clear concise reports and correspondence; ability to interact effectively with many levels of personnel.

20% Wellness and Recreation Facility Operations and Administration:

  • Assists with daily facility operations, making sure staff and participants follow established policies and procedures. This includes maintaining attendance records, incident reports, and other statistical information.
  • Assists with the safety of all facilities and programs.
  • Assists with the coordinating facility and equipment maintenance. This includes hands-on work as well as submission and follow-through on work orders to physical plant.
  • Serve as liaison to the Department of Student Activities.

20% Campus and Community Engagement/Customer Service:

  • Ability to work with and communicate effectively with colleagues from across campus, student representatives, and campus departments in reviewing established procedures, discussing improvements, solving problems, and following through with implementing solutions.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, including ability to appropriately exercise independent judgement, initiative, tact, diplomacy, flexibility, and patience.
  • Ability to maintain relationships with persons from diverse backgrounds and at various organizational levels within and outside the university, with sensitivity to the cultural differences of a diverse campus population.
  • Skills in conflict management techniques and high customer service standards.

Additional Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Under the direction of the Director, the Assistant Director collaborates with university leaders and departments, advocating for the present and future health, wellness and recreation needs of the campus.
  • The Assistant Director may serve on campus-wide committees and task forces and participate in professional associations.
  • Cultivating a culture of innovation and national prominence in collegiate recreational sports, fitness, and wellness is a foundational priority.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.

Qualifications:

Knowledge, Skills, Abilities, and Personal Characteristics

  • Knowledge of shared usage practices and priorities between fitness programs, intramurals and services (recreation).
  • Knowledge of basic principles of supervision and administration.
  • Experience managing fitness and intramurals.
  • Ability to effectively listen, work and communicate with all levels of employees and students.
  • Ability to effectively plan for and manage programs and events.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills to communicate effectively with all levels of staff and campus stakeholders, both verbally and in writing.
  • Proficient working knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite.
  • Current knowledge of State and Federal regulations and industry standards (NIRSA) related to liability and risk associated with recreational programs and facilities.
  • Interpersonal skills to work effectively and establish collaborative working relationships with persons from diverse backgrounds and at various organizational levels within and outside the university, with sensitivity to the cultural differences of a diverse campus population.
  • Must be a self-starter and demonstrate initiative without direct supervision.

Certification, Licenses, Registrations:

Required:

  • Bachelor's degree in Recreation Administration, Business Administration, Sports Management, Higher Education, or closely related field and/or equivalent experience/training.
  • At least 2-5 years of progressive experience in recreation programs or university departments.

Preferred:

  • Experience in athletics and/or recreation programs in a university setting.
  • Valid national certification for Aerobics and Fitness Instruction (e.g. AFAA, ACSM, ACE, NCSA).
  • Current First Aid/CPR Certifications.
  • Active in professional organizations (NIRSA, NASPA, ACPA, etc.)
  • Master's degree in Recreation Administration, Business Administration, Sports Management, Higher Education, or closely related field.

Physical Demands:

  • Ability to sit at a workstation or stand for extended periods.
  • Occasional ability to lift, carry, and put away parcels weighing up to 25 pounds.
  • Normal physical mobility, which includes movement from place to place on the job taking distance and speed into account.
  • Normal physical agility, which includes the ability to maneuver body while in place.
  • Normal physical strength to handle routine office materials and tools.
  • Normal dexterity of hands and fingers, normal endurance.
  • Normal coordination, including eye-hand, hand-foot.

Fiscal Responsibility:

  • Per the direction of the Director of Campus Wellness and Recreation.
  • General knowledge of administrative operations and planning.
  • Knowledge of pertinent federal and state laws and regulatory provisions.

Extent of Public Contact:

The Assistant Director must actively promote the University recreation and wellness programs. The professional must establish positive working relationships with both internal and external constituents. This includes extensive contact with Lincoln University students, faculty, staff, and alumni. Also interacts with the community and other external stakeholders.

  • Represents the university as a secondary liaison to the Jefferson City Parks and Recreation Department and Parks and Recreation Commission.
  • Some travel.
