Aquaculture Technician

Position Summary

Assist, oversee, and conduct grant research for food-fish aquaculture. Applicant must enjoy research and possess the ability to perform or supervise detailed work and maintain comprehensive records.

Essential Functions, Duties, and Responsibilities

• Fish husbandry - fish care and feeding, as well as maintaining research aquaculture systems
• Research documentation - record keeping, data computation, data entry, and data analysis
• Experimental trial preparation - develop trial protocols and procedures, obtain trial equipment and supplies to successfully initiate and conduct experimental trials
• Supervise research staff and student workers
• Maintain budget and inventory for research trials
• The work environment involves everyday risks or discomforts which requires normal safety precautions, typical of such places as farming, vehicle use, and office work

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

• Interest in research
• Competency with spreadsheets, word processing, and generating presentations
• Ability to communicate verbally and in writing
• Ability to operate photography and video recording equipment

Education and Experience

• Minimum Bachelor of Science in aquaculture, fisheries, biology, agriculture or related field
• Knowledge and experience related to aquaculture
• Preferred: research experience

Physical Requirements

• Ability to sit at a workstation for extended periods of time
• Ability to frequently life, carry, and put away parcels weighing up to 50 lbs.
• Ability to drive UTV, trucks, tractors
• Ability to swim and negotiate wet pond bottoms
• Normal dexterity of hands and fingers
• Normal physical strength to handle automatic feeding equipment, carry feed sacks, and aerator units moved between and within ponds
• Work will be conducted under all weather conditions, excluding lightening and frostbite conditions, with expectation of having to wade or swim in ponds.
