Animal Research Technician

Position Summary

The Research Technician will perform tasks required for small ruminant breeding projects, managing experiments, field data collection and reporting and the operation of research laboratories.

Essential Functions, Duties, and Responsibilities

• Conduct small ruminant selection projects with a focus on lean meat growth and resistance to disease.
• Actively manage research flock by handling animals and field samplings while completing phenotype or genotype testing.
• Manage animal selection, breeding, monitoring, and production performance recording.
• Conduct routine field or lab tasks, such as feed formulating, gastrointestinal parasite inspection, microbial, and cell culture.
• Accurately maintain field and lab data bases, timely update records and files, and produce field work summaries or lab reports.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

• Ability to properly utilize instruments including autoclaves, incubators, biolog, biotyper, SEM, HemaVet, and other field tools.
• Actively contribute to field day presentations, data analysis, and interlaboratory assessments.
• Participate in extension outreach activities, field trips, or farm visitations.
• Supervise undergraduate interns, graduate researchers, and technicians as to correct protocols, procedures, lab techniques, and methods.

Education and Experience

• Bachelor's degree in Animal Science, Biology, or Veterinary Technology or related field required.
• One year of experience in ruminant livestock management or production preferred.

Physical Requirements

• Ability to navigate all areas of the farm.
• Ability to operate standard farm equipment.
• Ability to restrain and handle small ruminant livestock.
• Ability to lift up to 80lbs.
