Academic Coach - Nursing

Position Summary

Under the direction of the Dean, the guidance of the Program Coordinator and in collaboration with the classroom-nursing instructors, the Academic coach will provide targeted support instruction and intervention for nursing students including those in need of remediation. The Academic Coach will conduct ongoing informal and formal assessments to identify needs and mentor progress while interpreting assessments in order to design appropriate remediation and instruction. The Academic Coach will guide students to the successful achievement of their academic goals at the University.


Essential Functions, Duties, and Responsibilities

  • Provide targeted academic support, instruction and intervention for nursing students in need of remediation. Develop and coordinate retention activities for low performing students. Instruct student success classes as needed.
  • Conduct ongoing informal and formal assessments to identify needs and monitor progress while interpreting assessments in order to design appropriate remediation and instruction.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Knowledge of subject material, concepts and issues related to nursing education.
  • Skilled in presenting complex materials and concepts in an understandable and appropriate manner. Skilled in leading group discussions, utilizing a variety of instruction aids and technologies.
  • Ability to use a wide range of instructional practices, approaches methods, and curriculum materials to support remediation in nursing.
  • Ability to write reports, learning objectives and test questions.

Education and Experience

  • Minimum of a graduate degree in nursing.
  • Current/unencumbered Registered Nurse licensed in the State of Missouri
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills, curriculum development, and assessment Grant writing and/or fundraising or the willingness to acquire these skills within the first year
  • Have at least two years of clinical nursing practice
  • Previous teaching experience with at least two years of fulltime clinical experience in the area/areas of teaching responsibility; knowledge and skills related to teaching adults, teaching methodology, curriculum development, and evaluation Excellent oral and written communication skills
  • Highly organized, detailed-oriented with the ability to multi-task

Physical Requirements

  • Occasional heavy lifting is required.
  • Acceptable eyesight (with or without correction).
  • Acceptable hearing (with or without hearing aid).
  • Ability to communicate both orally and in writing.
  • Able to actively demonstrate and participate in the skills laboratory and clinical without physical limitations.
